Chapter 8: Concentrate on the Lesson

Somehow I managed to escape Yuna’s fierce pursuit and am now in the middle of class.

I was quite good at math until middle school, but I suddenly stopped understanding it in high school. And we’re still at the beginning.

「Adashino-san, Adashino-san.」

Nanaka calls out to me in a hushed voice as I was giving up and watching the students doing PE in the schoolyard.

I don’t have a hobby of chatting with lumps of meat, so maybe I’ll ignore her.

See, I have a promise with Yuna.

I’m a weak man. Forgive me.

「What?」

「Why do we have to learn math that we’ll never use in society?」

「Hmm.」

That’s a tough one.

Isn’t it rather a topic we shouldn’t think about?

On the blackboard are words like “cross multiplication” that seem unlikely to be used in a lifetime of social life.

We might use probabilities and data distribution, but at least in general living, I don’t think we’ll use cross multiplication, trigonometric functions, or Euclidean algorithms.

Well, maybe we’ll use the Euclidean algorithm…

Despite appearances—or perhaps because of them—she doesn’t seem to be good at math.

Well, from her usual words and actions, she did give off an airhead vibe.

If I lose to even a lump of meat in academic performance, I feel it would be embarrassing as a human.

「By the way, changing the subject.」

「Yes.」

「Yuna is easy to understand, isn’t she?」

「Indeed.」

We both look at Yuna glaring at us from outside the window.

She seemed to be in a PE class, wearing gym clothes that barely qualify as organic material, instead of her usual tattered uniform.

Why is everything Yuna wears tattered?

Is it her hobby?

But there’s no way I can say to Nanaka, her sister, “Does your little sister have a hobby of wearing ragged clothes? That’s unusual”.

This question was destined to rot inside my chest.

There are things in the world better left unknown.

Just like the reason we learn math.

「Isn’t she too persistent?」

「Umm, maybe she’s that worried about me?」

「It’s a physical fitness test. And it’s the 50-meter dash.」

From the track in the schoolyard where Yuna and the others are to this classroom, it’s about two hundred meters.

Even at that distance, I can feel her gaze, so maybe there’s a full force of “I’ll kill you, human” intent behind it.

If I don’t see the dawn of tomorrow, there’s a ninety percent chance the cause will be Kusakabe Yuna. Both the older sister and younger sister have too much murderous intent towards me.

Even though she was currently running the 50-meter dash, she kept her neck at an angle, glaring this way.

It’s horror beyond being a zombie.

Yet she’s faster than anyone else running at the same time.

She’s defying the common belief that zombies move slowly.

「She’s good at sports.」

「Yes. I’m not good at it though… my athletic reflexes were taken away.」

When it comes to Nanaka, I feel like the conversation starts with whether she even has nerves running through her.

I can’t help but stare at her.

The lump of meat blushes, seemingly having a proper sense of shame.

“I-It’s embarrassing if you look at me that much…” she says.

Is it possible to be this unmoved by such a line?

I nodded deeply, realizing there are still many things I don’t know about the world.

「Oi, Adashino You. Kusakabe Nanaka.」

「Yes.」

「Y-Yes!」

「You’re talking too much. These guys are so distracted by your conversation that not one of them is looking at the blackboard.」

The math teacher, with a throbbing vein on his forehead, bangs on the blackboard.

Hearing those words and looking around, indeed, there’s a storm of gazes.

I guess talking during class was out of line.

「H-Hieee…」

Nanaka shyly lowers the tip of the lump of meat.

I’ve been wondering for a while, is that like her head?

She must be using the tentacles growing all over her body as substitutes for arms and legs.

I can’t imagine any other organs.

The more I think about it, the stranger a creature she is.

My sister in my chest pocket is just as weird though.

As I waved to Yuna who occasionally glared at me, and watched Nanaka emit mysterious steam, seemingly from using her head too much, the long and painful math class finally ended.

The chime announcing our release sounds like an incredibly wonderful melody.

Despite it coming from a speaker that has quite a historical feel to it.

In other words, it’s terribly distorted.

But my classmates and I, who have gotten used to the distortion after listening to it for over a week, started doing whatever we liked without questioning anything.

With the end of the previous class, it was now lunchtime.

I also take out the bento my sister made from my bag.

「Oh, Adashino-san, you have a bento?」

「Yeah.」

「That’s rare, you usually have bread or something.」

Because my parents are busy, I rarely eat a bento.

As she said, I usually buy bread or something to eat.

But since my sister made it for me along with breakfast, I decided to gratefully accept it.

At least in terms of household chores, it’s embarrassing to lose to darkness.

「Well, just a bit.」

I brush it off casually, not wanting her to notice my sister’s existence.

Opening the cheap bento, I found a breathtaking view that made me swallow my saliva. An array of brown foods that high school boys love.

But with some vegetables scattered here and there, showing consideration for nutrition.

「Wow, it looks delicious!」

Having gotten used to Nanaka’s appearance by now, I was able to eat meat even with a lump of meat in front of me.
