Chapter 9: Don’t Throw Away Your Pride

I’m being watched as I eat slowly.

It’s extremely hard to eat. After all, she’s a lump of meat.

If I’m not careful, I might get eaten myself.

「Ehehe.」

「…You seem happy.」

「I haven’t had many chances to eat with friends.」

Surely, sitting next to a being that looks like it might drip blood any moment would be tough.

Or so I thought, but to everyone else, she’s a beautiful girl.

I feel like I’m missing out.

Nanaka supports her head with her tentacles while smiling at me. As if to say she doesn’t need to eat.

It’s awkward to continue eating alone.

After finishing my bite and swallowing, I opened my mouth.

「Aren’t you going to eat, Nanaka?」

「Ah, I forgot!」

Nanaka’s bell-like voice is tinged with embarrassment.

She hurriedly takes out a small bento box from her bag.

She unwraps it, which has a compact silhouette with a cherry blossom design, as if touching a sugar sculpture.

I wonder what a lump of meat eats.

It took me a week to get used to my somewhat unique classmates, and I’ve never eaten with Nanaka before.

Unusually for this school, the rooftop is open, so I always went there with bread.

「I-It’s nothing special, really.」

「Yeah, right.」

Such modesty.

I’m sure it’s full of raw meat or something.

Because she’s a lump of meat.

As I watched her bento box with expectant eyes, the secret of Nanaka’s ecology was revealed──.

A jungle.

A season of lush green.

Endless blue.

Call it what you will, but her bento was packed with so many vegetables that just looking at it made me feel healthier.

It might even lower the carbon dioxide level in the classroom.

No tomatoes or anything to escape from the theme. Just green.

「That’s unique.」

「Actually, I’m not good with meat…」

With that appearance?

That’s downright deceptive. You were more radiant when you were called the mighty meat-devouring warrior.

No, maybe it’s because of that appearance.

If Nanaka were eating meat, I’d think “Wow, caught cannibalism on camera”.

Things you expect might actually turn out to be more grounded. Even classmates who should be universally normal are lumps of meat.

「Ah, so should I not have eaten meat in front of you?」

「No, it’s fine as long as I’m not the one eating it.」

That was close, I almost became an inconsiderate guy.

I’ve heard that being inconsiderate doesn’t make you popular.

Given my already slim chances, I should at least maintain what I can within reach.

After that, while receiving jealous glances for having lunch with the new beautiful girl everyone in school was talking about, I finished the bento my sister, who was sleeping soundly in my chest pocket, had made.

I was curious about how Nanaka, being a lump of meat, would eat, and to my surprise, a slit appeared where a human’s mouth would be, and vegetables were being stored there.

It was like watching an alien movie.

As I felt full, drowsiness slowly crept in.

Just as my eyelids were about to meet, she spoke to me.

「What do you usually do, Adashino-san?」

「Eh.」

「I realized I don’t know anything about you, Adashino-san…」

Come to think of it.

I tried to recall, but I’ve never talked about hobbies with Nanaka.

It’s strange to think of a lump of meat having hobbies though.

「Reading, I guess.」

「Heeh!」

「Watching movies, maybe.」

「Heeh!」

An exaggerated reaction to everything I say.

It’s like she’s enjoying the conversation from the bottom of her heart.

「What about you, Nanaka?」

「Me? Let’s see, umm.」

Her tentacles sway aimlessly in the air.

Maybe it’s a habit when she thinks.

It feels like watching a jellyfish drift in the sea.

「Ah, I like cats!」

「To eat?」

「I don’t eat them!? What do you think I am!」

Just kidding.

Apparently, she spends her free time watching cats.

About three seconds away from a predation scene.

「Really now. Adashino-san, you’re mean, aren’t you?」

「I’ve never been told that.」

「But you are mean.」

What a youthful conversation.

It would be perfect if the other party wasn’t a lump of meat.

「I like dogs too, but I prefer cats.」

Nanaka manipulated her tentacles like fingers and brought them together in front of her chest──if we’re comparing her to a human, that is. As if feeling shy.

For me, it’s just soft meat touching each other, so I don’t feel anything, but apparently, my classmates think differently. From all around, I can hear voices like “Ugh” and “Guh” as if they’ve been attacked.

「Heeh, by the way, which do you prefer?」

「…If I had to choose, I guess cats.」

I usually like both equally, but I don’t remember any zombie cats in Resident Evil.

Yuna glares at me, lifting her eyeballs that seem about to fall out.

She pouts her lips shaped in a confident way and crosses her arms with a huff.

「You appear suddenly.」

「Maybe you’re just not paying attention.」

「That hurts to hear.」

I wonder when she appeared. I was facing Nanaka and talking, so naturally, my field of vision was expanding towards the center of the classroom.

Yet she appeared.

She really acts like in a horror movie.
