Chapter 13: Darkness, Monsters. There’s No Way Nothing Would Happen…

If someone as careless as you tries to dress up, it just looks like the clothes are wearing you, so this will do for now, she said.

Yuna bought the clothes that were on a mannequin in front of the store as they were.

Or rather, I was made to buy them. Well, I don’t have much use for money anyway.

「…It’s somewhat better, I guess?」

「I’m extremely grateful for your praise.」

「It’s a compromise.」

She, being a zombie, snorts in dissatisfaction.

I can’t tell what has changed, but presumably, there has been a positive change.

「I really want to cut your hair too… but since this isn’t a real date, it’s fine not to go that far.」

Yuna sighed, putting her hand on her forehead. “Why does Onee-chan even bother with someone like this?” she mutters. She looks good despite being a zombie.

Maybe her original form was good. Although her charm has significantly decreased because she’s about to rot away, even a rotten sea bream is still a sea bream.

I wouldn’t want to eat rotten sea bream though.

「What do we do now?」

「Well, to be honest, I didn’t really plan anything.」

An open answer. Considering the circumstances that led to this date, the Kusakabe family might indeed have some unfortunate genes. If you look past the major unfortunate points of being a lump of meat and a zombie, you could call it somewhat unfortunate.

Yuna stared at the ceiling lights for a while, then looked at a curtain hanging from the ceiling and said, “That will do”, pointing at it.

「A movie?」

「Yeah. It’s the classic date, right? I wouldn’t know since I’ve never done it.」

「Well, it’s common.」

In rom-coms and such. I’ve never seen one with a zombie as the partner though.

I expected to enjoy a bittersweet youth when I became a high school student. Where did I go wrong in my choices?

If anything, I feel like it came from the other side.

After walking for a few minutes on the carpet-like floor, we stood at the entrance of a movie theater that looked like it could launch into space with some effort. The minimal lighting looks like stars.

However, Yuna, being either careless or unconcerned with trivialities, heads straight for the automatic ticket machine without paying any attention to such details.

「What do you want to watch?」

「Unn.」

I cross my arms.

I’ve never thought of myself as indecisive, but when it comes to choosing a movie to watch, I do take time to decide.

『Theatrical Version Golden Adventure of the Holy Knight Pencil: The Lost Lead』

『Passionate Love Between Cambodia and Geneva (Ballad)』

『Legendary Go Player: Board-Flipping Motochika』

『Zombie Panic Revolution』

『Beyond That Summer, You Smile』

『Pure Love with a Zombie ~Endless Love~』

And so on…

I’m curious about “Legendary Go Player: Board-Flipping Motochika”.

──Light Novels──

──Read Here──

Board-flipping, does that mean he flips the go board like flipping a table?

If he does that in a match, “Damn it─!” He’d be beheaded in a public match.

「What do you want to watch?」

「Legendary Go Player: Board-Flipping Motochika.」

「Uwaa… bad taste.」

It reeks of a Z-grade movie.

But Yuna didn’t seem to understand, crossing her arms with a look of total disbelief.

My sensibilities are rejected even by a zombie. Sad.

「It’s a date, so choose something better. Like this.」

She pointed at “Beyond That Summer, You Smile”. It looks like an emotional romance movie. I thought Yuna would choose “Zombie Panic Revolution” or “Pure Love with a Zombie ~Endless Love~”. Based on her appearance.

In the end, we decided to watch that.

Darkness, monsters. There’s no way nothing would happen… well, nothing happened.

Honestly, I didn’t have high expectations, but it was surprisingly interesting.

Maybe I’ll include romance in my range from now on.

「…Uu, uu.」

And what should I do? Yuna was crying like crazy.

Large tears were streaming down from her eyes that seemed about to fall out, and her shoulders were shaking.

People around us whispered, “He’s the worst for making a girl cry”.

I never thought she’d be this easily moved to tears. Sure, the scene where the protagonist’s beloved dog, Elizaveta, sold herself to the circus to help the sickly heroine tugged at the heartstrings… but does she have to cry this much?

「Elizaveta…」

「Shall we change places for now?」

「Why are you so heartless!? Elizaveta was sold off!?」

Even if she calls me heartless.

I just want to escape the glaring eyes from around us.

She didn’t seem like she would move even with a lever, so I pulled Yuna’s hand to move.

She followed me surprisingly obediently, though still sobbing.

It was like walking a dog. Like Elizaveta.

Eventually, we reached the food court, and I sat her down on a chair, still shaking, and went to get some cold water to calm her down.

When I handed her the paper cup filled with water, a small “Thanks” came back.

「…Nn, nn.」

In the bustling food court, the swallowing sound, which should have been weak, strangely echoed loudly. A small drip of water from the corner of her lips trickled down her rotting throat, becoming transparent.

「Fuu…」

「Calmed down?」

「……Yeah, I guess.」

Yuna, with whom I made eye contact for the first time in a while, blushes shyly.

The contrast with her unhealthy-looking skin made it look quite vivid.
