Chapter 20: The Pressure is Intense, The Pressure is Intense

A two-meter radius centered on me entered an ice age.

The overwhelming chill obviously originated from Yuna.

It seems she’s using her zombie-like appearance to help combat summer fatigue.

The only pity is that it’s still April. The opportunity for her to shine is far off.

「Who is that girl?」

「I can hear you.」

「Then answer me.」

Yuna quietly crosses her arms.

But since her anger is overflowing, it’s like dealing with a bomb that could explode at any moment.

If I had a girlfriend and was caught cheating, I wouldn’t complain.

Why am I being cornered even though this isn’t the above situation?

「She’s Sakasegawa-san from the next class.」

「Did you pick up another one?」

What’s with “another one”?

I’ve never had a girlfriend before.

Therefore, such a refined adjective as “another” is impossible.

I almost wanted to say that, but since there’s a possibility I might get bitten if I directly tell the seemingly angry zombie-sama, I open my mouth, choosing my words carefully.

「We just happened to be together for library committee work.」

「Fuun.」

She placed her hand on her chin and glared at the ceiling.

She’s probably thinking about what to do with me next.

I might receive a death sentence. I’ve already incurred her displeasure with my relationship with her older sister and what seemed like a date. If I add more fuel to the fire, it will definitely explode. Unfortunately, I might die at the age of fifteen.

As a slight sheen of sweat trickles down my forehead, Nanaka, who had been looking down at the seat next to me, starts shaking her shoulders──or what I assume are shoulders,

「──Puh, pupu.」

「……What, Onee-chan?」

「No, I was just thinking how Yuna has become honest.」

「Haa!?」

Gata.

Yuna stands up, making the chair creak loudly.

But Nanaka, seemingly used to such behavior, doesn’t stop.

「Cute.」

「Stop looking at me like I’m some child who teases the person they like!」

「You get it, don’t you?」

「Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!」

The zombie screams, her hair in disarray.

If you just cut out this scene, it would be a panic horror.

My seat just became vacant, so I sit down. With lunch break about to end, I might as well prepare for the next class.

「You’re wrong!」

「About what?」

「T-That… about Adashino…!」

「By the way, when did you start calling Adashino-san by his last name?」

「Geeeeeeeeeez!!!!!」

Yuna’s face turned bright red as she crouched down.

I don’t know what Yuna said because I’m consciously distancing myself from their conversation, as I’m sure that an ordinary human would die if caught in a fight between monsters.

──Light Novels──

──Read Here──

The meaningful gaze she directed at me pierces my profile as I stare at the empty blackboard.

Does this mean I have to look that way?

I don’t want to, because I might end up underground. It’s ironic to end up underground because of a zombie.

「Adashino, you deny it too.」

「That’s not true.」

「If you don’t explain specifically, you won’t escape Onee-chan’s questioning!」

I can’t do it because I’m not listening.

I won’t say it because I might literally get bitten if I do.

Look, the clock is about to ring.

If I can escape, I win.

Not that I know.

A scene resembling Ragnarok unfolds right beside me, with “Fufufufu” and “Guu…!”.

Along with amused gazes from all over the classroom.

I wish the teacher would come soon.

It’s truly regrettable that I’ve wished for classes to start sooner more often since becoming a high school student. If possible, I’d like to redo things.

Whether my wish reached the heavens or simply time passed as usual.

The cheap, distorted sound of the chime echoed, ending the monster showdown.

Nanaka is still shaking her shoulders, and Yuna is puffing her cheeks.

Please leave quickly. Swiftly, swiftly.

「Alright, let’s start the class─」

The math teacher’s voice lacks enthusiasm.

By the time that entered my ears, Yuna had left the classroom, and I could finally take a breath.

However, math awaits me next.

Hell either way.

Is there no salvation?

The library committee work lasts for a week. I thought I wouldn’t see Sakasegawa-san much after that week passed.

「Ah.」

「Ah.」

I’m a book lover but not wealthy, so I often use the library.

It seems she was the same, as the mud dauber approached slowly with a well-used eco-bag slung over her shoulder.

In her other hand was a basket containing about five books. All of them were thick, dictionary-like books that could be used as blunt weapons.

「What a coincidence.」

「Yeah.」

「Do you often come to the library, Adashino-kun?」

「Yeah.」

There’s only one library in the city.

Therefore, all book-loving students who have pretty much exhausted the school’s collection end up gathering at the library.

Of course, I, who spend my free time reading books or watching movies, and Sakasegawa-san, who exudes the atmosphere of a literature girl, were both drawn to the library. Like insects attracted to a moth lamp.

「They say every encounter has some meaning, so how about some tea afterwards?」

「Unn.」

It’s a precious day off.

I was planning to spend it leisurely reading.

Should I accept the mud dauber’s invitation?
