At the last moment, I awakened to being a perfect lefty, and managed to escape from Nanaka, who was trying to socially kill me with an “ahh~”.
Perhaps because I narrowly escaped death. The world looks beautiful.
Even the crows perched on the tattered baseball net seem like masterpieces in an art gallery.
And if that’s considered high-quality, then zombies must be beautiful too.
「…What’s with that look?」
「I was just thinking that A=B, B=C, therefore A=C only holds true in mathematics.」
「What are you even talking about?」
Yuna raised her eyebrows like a native discovering an idiot and sighed exaggeratedly. It might be a warning not to use math analogies when I’m not familiar with numbers. If I break it, I’ll never see the light of day again.
Why am I, an ordinary male student, walking home with a zombie?
The reason is simply that I happened to run into her in front of the shoe lockers.
God is dead. My hair might die from stress soon too.
Recently, a new threat called a mud dauber wasp has appeared, and my dream of living a normal rom-com life might soon be shattered.
Even with a lump of meat around, it’s okay.
Even with a zombie, I can manage.
Even with a ghost-like darkness, barely?
But if a mud dauber wasp shows up, it’s completely over. Game set.
The dream of a rom-com has faded away.
How sad.
As I’m walking alongside Yuna, I spot a line with an unusually high ratio of girls ahead. I have this prejudice that people who are particular about fashion tend to want to line up when they see a queue, and she seems to be no exception,
「Looks delicious. Let’s line up.」
She raised the corners of her mouth.
Another piece of evidence for my prejudice piles up.
Just a bit more and it could grow into a formula.
「What’s that?」
「Tapioca milk tea.」
「Tapi, oca…?」
「What’s with that reaction like a Japanese soldier just informed the war ended?」
So it was still alive.
I hadn’t seen it around lately, so I thought it had been wiped out by God’s wrath. Like the Tower of Babel.
It seems it had been clinging to the world, holding its breath.
What was in front of us was a food truck.
Behind a sign that read “Cafe: Cambodia & Turkistan”, two girls who looked like high school students were taking pictures of tapioca milk tea.
Strangely, the line for taking photos with the sign seemed longer than the line to order from the shop. Just barely outside Japan’s seven wonders.
「I’ve been dieting recently.」
「……?」
I tilted my head, unable to understand the intent behind Yuna’s sudden “I haven’t been eating people” declaration.
She’s already thin beyond human standards, so if she gets any thinner, she might even surpass monsters.
「You’re plenty thin.」
「Even so. Girls worry about even the smallest things.」
Haa.
So there are trivial matters that should be prioritized over the ridiculous flaw of being a zombie.
Girls are creatures I really can’t understand.
「…So, I’m a bit hungry.」
「Tapioca milk tea as a snack?」
「Yeah.」
It’s a well-known fact that her main dish is humans, but after mentioning dieting, I want to avoid being made the main dish myself out of her hunger.
Whether it’s tapioca milk tea, maritozzo, or nata de coco, I just want her to fill her stomach for now.
Hence, I averted my eyes from the unpleasant fact that “some types of tapioca milk tea have as many calories as a bowl of ramen”, which Yuna probably knew and was keeping quiet about, and watched her start lining up with a lukewarm gaze.
「It’s been a while since I last drank this.」
「…I didn’t order any though.」
「It’s lonely to drink alone, isn’t it?」
It was obvious that if Yuna and I lined up together, we’d be seen as a couple, so I stayed away from the line to wait.
The zombie holds out one of the round-lidded plastic cups she has in both hands. A reddish-brown color, like blood dripping into the water, presumably from brown sugar.
When I tilted my head, wondering what she meant, she gave the incomprehensible reason of “lonely”.
But, it would be rude to refuse and it would mean rejecting Yuna’s thoughtfulness.
I’ll just accept it quietly and return the favor later.
Firmly deciding this in my heart, we head towards a nearby park.
I’ve gotten so used to being side by side with a zombie that I no longer feel any discomfort, so my senses must really be getting messed up.
We find a suitable two-person bench and sit down on the warm wood.
「Fuu.」
Yuna lets out a small sigh.
She gazed at the tapioca milk tea with a dazed look.
It’s frustrating how well it suits her despite being a monster.
「Nn.」
She gently puts her mouth on the thick straw and starts sipping.
Her slender neck pulses. She touches her smooth hair and tucks it behind her ear, fanning her slightly reddened cheeks with her hand as if to cool them.
I, who felt resistance to consuming such a massive amount of calories, watched her like that, and Yuna, seemingly noticing my gaze, furrowed her brows.
「…What?」
「No, just thinking you drink it deliciously.」
After she said “I see” and mumbled, I put my mouth on the straw too.
Unn…
It was obvious that a rom-com with a monster wouldn’t work, but tapioca milk tea with brown sugar was sickeningly sweet for me after all.
Thanks for the chapter!
